Phase 1: Evaluating the Target Area

The Threat: Heavy canopy limbs extending directly across the roof plane. With brittle wood caused by internal rot, a single fallen limb could easily punch through shingles and roof decking.

A standard "drop and chop" tree service cannot handle a situation like this. The branches extended completely over the home's roof, while the base of the tree sat in a tight yard zone right next to the home's exterior air conditioning condenser. Dropping unrigged limbs was out of the question—every single piece of timber had to be secured, cut, and lowered under complete physical control.

Phase 2: Diagnosing Hypoxylon Canker

During our initial hazard assessment, the trunk confirmed our suspicions: a prominent, crusty tan-and-gray fungal mat running up the bark face.

Hypoxylon canker is an opportunistic fungal disease common across Central Texas. It latches onto hardwood trees already weakened by drought, heat stress, or root compaction. Once the fungus establishes itself beneath the bark, it rapidly destroys the sapwood, depriving the upper canopy of water and causing the wood to become extremely weak and glassy.

Because infected wood loses its structural elasticity, climbing an infected tree requires extreme caution and specialized arborist rigging techniques.

Phase 3: High-Climbing & Controlled Rigging

Using advanced climbing lines and high-strength rigging pulleys, our climber worked piecemeal from the top down. Each limb overhanging the roof was bound with lowering lines before the chainsaw cut was made.

Our ground crew managed the friction brake system below, guiding heavy wood sections safely away from the shingles, gutter lines, and fence, landing every section gently inside a designated drop zone in the turf.

Phase 4: The "Pristine Clean" Result
